Pioneering Green Cement Through Research and Innovation

Leading the Future of Sustainable Construction in Uganda

At Eco Concrete Ltd, research and development are at the heart of our mission to transform the construction industry in Uganda and Sub-Saharan Africa. Founded on a passion for innovation and sustainability, we are breaking new ground in the development of low-carbon, eco-friendly cement alternatives.

Since 2016, Eco Concrete has expanded from its roots in traditional construction into a dynamic force driving research and innovation in sustainable building materials. Our R&D journey began with a simple question: How can we build better, more affordably, and in harmony with the environment?

Scientific Innovation with Local Roots

In 2021, Eco Concrete launched a groundbreaking research initiative to develop green cement binders using Uganda’s natural mineral resources. In collaboration with international partners including Resourceful and Concreet Projectmanagement B.V. (Netherlands), we began testing binders made from volcanic ash from Rubanda and kaolinite clay from Rakai.

Laboratory results exceeded expectations—concrete products achieved compressive strengths of up to 70 MPa, rivaling and even surpassing conventional Portland cement.

Eco-Friendly, Cost-Effective Alternatives

The innovation doesn’t stop at strength. Our green cement:

  • Reduces production costs by approximately 40% compared to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
  • Minimizes environmental impact, with significantly lower carbon emissions
  • Utilizes abundant local materials, reducing reliance on imported clinker
  • Demonstrates superior water resistance and chloride ion durability

Pilot Projects and Real-World Application

In partnership with Build to Impact (Netherlands) and funded by the European Union’s INNOWWIDE Eureka Network, Eco Concrete piloted green block production in Rubanda District. The blocks were used to construct a climate-resilient homestead; a model for affordable, sustainable housing in rural Uganda.

This pilot not only tests the commercial feasibility of our binders but also serves as a living example of how innovative materials can directly benefit local communities.

Building the Future, One Binder at a Time

To scale this innovation, Eco Concrete is establishing a 120-ton-per-day green cement plant in Rubanda and planning a second 600-ton LC3 cement factory in Lyantonde. These facilities will collectively produce enough material to construct dozens of homes daily, significantly addressing Uganda’s rural housing needs.

Our research doesn’t just live in labs; it fuels a practical vision for sustainable urbanization, climate resilience, and inclusive growth.

Research That Impacts Lives

Eco Concrete’s R&D efforts are deeply aligned with global and national development goals:

  • Reducing Uganda’s CO₂ emissions—cement accounts for over 40% of the country’s total
  • Supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as affordable housing, climate action, and responsible consumption
  • Creating jobs and empowering local supply chains across Uganda
